Look for the details in the following paragraphs. Have a great fall friends :)

What is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a grower’s alliance between farmers and consumers. Families and individuals who join the CSA receive a share of produce every week during the growing season (mid-May through mid-October). In exchange, members sign a contract for the season, agree to pay in advance, or through a payment plan and help with some of the work of harvest and distribution of the food. Members then pick up their food shares weekly at the farm, other area drop sites or are delivered for a small fee. (If the working model does not fit your lifestyle then we have a non-worker share, too!) Our partnership shares in the risks and rewards of small-scale farming: weather, insect damage, flooding, drought, etc. or good rains, perfect summers, bumper crops, etc.

Who is Danjo Farms?

Dan and Joanne Nelson are avid, professional natural gardeners. Since both of them grew up on farms in rural Iowa and Utah, they have dreamed of owning a small farm. They have had a sustainable farm since 1997 in Utah, then moving to Stockton, Missouri in 2002 on 80 acres. In January of 2006 they purchased 15 acres 5 miles south of Moberly, Missouri. Danjo Farms also holds social and educational events to celebrate local, sustainable farming and the community harvest. Danjo Farms is a single farm CSA program and can deliver a wide array of farm products to you and your family. They only out-source with companion farmers listed under "About Danjo". Currently they are out-sourcing some of the berries and some of the fruit as Danjo's orchard and brambles were just planted in 2007-8.

What is my share of the food grown?

The weekly food share includes an average of 7 to 9 vegetable items (up to a box / #20) for a full share and 5 to 7 vegetables items (up to a ½ box / #10) for a half share. A full share should be ample for a family of two to four adults who cook at home regularly and eat a lot of vegetables.  A half share is a good size for two adults who do not cook at home every night. A quarter share (up to a ¼ box / #5) is more than enough for a single person wanting locally grown food, too!

We try our very best to plan planting of the vegetable crops early enough and in succession to make these numbers work. Usually you will receive less produce early and late in the season, and more at the peak of the season. This is an optimal scenario as we have little control over Mother Nature (hail, drought, tornadoes, heavy winds, insect infestations, virus or bacterial infections, etc.)

Every week the share of produce will be different depending on the time of the season. Here are some basic examples of what might be in your share:
SPRING - snow peas, baby beets w/ greens, green onions, carrots w/ tops, lettuces, kohlrabi, radishes, chives and/or Italian parsley, spinach, broccoli, mustard greens, etc.
SUMMER –tomatoes, sweet and/or hot peppers, eggplant, okra, melons, cucumbers, onions, green beans, summer squashes, zucchini, basil and/or dill, etc.
FALL – winter squash, Swiss chard, carrots, potatoes, garlic, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin, lettuces, Chinese radish, sage and/or rosemary, etc.

Bulk quantities can be purchased for canning, freezing, and storage.  Call ahead for availability or order ahead of the season so we can grow them out for you!

We will also handle a wide variety of Missouri value-added products, herbs, meats, nuts, berries and fruit from other local farmers for an additional cost from our Country Store. These will be delivered “free of charge” with a paid share in season on regular drop-off days.

We will be blogging a newsletter every week with the farmshare information regarding produce, berries, and fruit available that week and recipes, articles of interest and farm news. Go to the homepage and click on read the latest blog to find out "What's in the box" weekly with the CSA farmshare program and more local or national foodie news associated with the sustainable Ag movement.

Who can join?

Membership is open to everyone in the greater Jefferson City-Columbia / Kirksville-Moberly, Missouri areas.  All shares offered may be split between more than one family or group of individuals. Families with children are especially welcome and we will arrange the shares farm work schedule to include children to the greatest extent possible.

What does it cost?

An initial $25 non-refundable deposit is required to join. The deposit will hold your place until sign-up and will then be applied against the cost of your share.   We do offer a payment plan during the season which would start the first of May and end the first of November for the Summer CSA or the first of November and end on the first day of May for the winter CSA ( 7 monthly payments ). Paying up front or paying monthly is up to you! If you have any other payment wishes, just ask!

How does the work share work?
Each shareholder’s household contributes by assisting with the harvest of the shares a few times each year. This farm work takes place all days of the week except Sundays. This includes planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, washing, and packing that day’s picking from the fields. So, remember to bring your work clothes and appropriate shoes when coming to work. If the working model doesn’t fit your lifestyle then we have a non-worker share, too!  Several hours can be satisfied in one session depending on the number of participants a household brings.  Members will schedule these shifts with Dan and Joanne after joining the CSA program.

Where do I pick up my food?

Moberly and northern area members will coordinate pick-up at Danjo Farms Country Store. The Columbia and Jefferson City area members will coordinate pick-up at the Columbia Farmers Market or Ashland - Coyote Farm & Home Market.

If you find this information old and we are all sold out of shares for the season, then e-mail us and get on our waiting list. We may have an opening or two up for grabs this season from dropouts.  We are also selling memberships for 2012. Can I volunteer?

Yes! We are constantly looking for volunteer help daily. Give us a call and come out for a couple of hours to see the farm operation and help out.  We will do our very best to send you home with a sampling of produce and an appreciation of the benefits of local, sustainable and naturally grown products. We would always like the opportunity to meet you.  We will be at the local farmers markets through out the week. If you cannot catch us there then stop by the farm – we would love to show you around!
