Our SUMMER CSA farmshare program is now in open enrollment for the 2012 season. Look for the details in the following paragraphs. Have a great winter friends :)

What is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a grower’s alliance between farmers and consumers. Farmers grow out the desired produce, livestock, berries and fruit based on specific standards to ensure quality and nutrition. Families and individuals joining as members receive a farmshare of produce every week during the growing season. In exchange members sign a contract for a season and agree to pay in advance or through a payment plan. Members then pick up their food shares weekly at an area drop site or the farm. In the summer, the CSA farmshare program gives you the opportunity to see where your food is grown.  Our partnership shares in the risks and rewards of small-scale farming - from insect damage, cold weather, flooding, or drought to good rains, perfect summers, or bumper crops. Families receiving healthy food, farmers’ supported by these families and our community growing stronger and more secure is the philosophy of our CSA farmshare program.

Who is Danjo Farms?

Dan and Joanne Nelson are avid, professional naturally grown gardeners. Since both of them grew up on farms in rural Iowa and Utah, they have dreamed of owning a small farm. They have had a sustainable farm since 1997 in Utah, then moving to Stockton, Missouri in 2002 on 80 acres. In January of 2006 they purchased 15 acres 5 miles south of Moberly, Missouri. Danjo Farms also holds social and educational events to celebrate local, sustainable farming and the community harvest. Danjo Farms is a multi- farm CSA program and can deliver a wide array of farm products to you and your family. They only source verifying with companion farmers listed under "About Danjo". Currently they are out-sourcing vegetables, meats, eggs, berries and  fruit from other local Mid-Missouri farmers. We have had a transition in our labor pool since our five boys are now young men with lives of their own. Currently we are exchanging labor with WOOF (World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farms) and local seasonal help. Danjo's still has a vegetable gardens, green housing,  a small herd of hogs, raising chickens and turkeys with an small orchard and berry patch on the farm just for you!

What is my share of the food grown?

The weekly food share includes an average of 7 to 9 vegetable items for a full share and 5 to 7 vegetables items for a half share. A full share should be ample for a family of two to four adults who cook at home regularly and eat a lot of vegetables.  A half share is a good size for two adults who do not cook at home every night. A quarter share is more than enough for a single person wanting locally grown food, too!

We try our very best to plan planting of the vegetable crops early enough and in succession to make these numbers work. Usually you will receive less produce early and late in the season, and more at the peak of the season. This is an optimal scenario as we have little control over Mother Nature (hail, drought, cold weather, tornadoes, heat waves, flooding, heavy winds, insect infestations, etc.)

Every week the share of produce will be different depending on the time of the season. Here are some basic examples of what might be in your share:
SPRING - snow peas, baby beets w/ greens, green onions, carrots w/ tops, lettuces, kohlrabi, radishes, chives and/or Italian parsley, spinach, broccoli, mustard greens, etc.
SUMMER –tomatoes, sweet and/or hot peppers, eggplant, okra, melons, cucumbers, onions, green beans, summer squashes, zucchini, basil and/or dill, etc.
FALL – winter squash, Swiss chard, carrots, potatoes, garlic, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin, lettuces, Chinese radish, sage and/or rosemary, etc.

Bulk quantities can be purchased for canning, freezing, and storage.  Call ahead for availability or order ahead of the season so we can grow them out for you!

We will also handle a wide variety of Missouri value-added products, herbs, meats, nuts, berries and fruit from other local farmers for an additional cost from our Country Store. These will be delivered “free of charge” with a paid share in season on regular drop-off days.

We will be hosting a FACEBOOK page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Danjo-Farms/168661053180186) throughout the season's with the farmshare information regarding produce, berries, and fruit available that week and recipes, articles of interest, farm pictures and AG & sustainable farm news. Go to the homepage and click on  "What's in the Box" weekly to see what is in store for vegetables, fruit & berries, meat cuts, etc. in your CSA farmshare program.
