Happy New Year's 2011!

Happy New Years to all of you - friends, family and our wonderful customers!

We have been enjoying the holidays this year with our boys, friends and companion farmers.  Much has changed this year into the next as 2011 is here! We have been busy working on expanding into the Saint Louis market with new customers and friends at the St. Johns - Mercy Medical Center. They had come to us in September wanting to put together a employee healthy food choice program for their Wellness Center. We have partnered up with them to offer the employees, friends and families our CSA farmshare program as a healthy, local alternative. Thanks to Janine Ford, Chef Jerry and Mary Mercer and all  the folks on the Wellness Center committee for allowing us this opportunity. And also the great new friends we have found in the membership that have already signed up for the CSA program.

Well, we are off to Rexburg, Idaho to take our oldest son to college there for the next semester. Then down to Salt Lake City to meet our son Aaron before he goes on his mission for 2 years to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Then over to Denver to see my sister Andrea and her family for the day. So, we are starting the year off with a vacation. Yet, we will be back for the Saturday Winter CSA share drop in Columbia, MO on January 8th. No worries unless we run into a blizzard. Yiikes!

Recipe's for January

I am a big soup and stew fan. Yum, Yum! So, I was thinking to try out this steamy, broth stew when I get back next week!

Cabbage & Pork Stew

2 pounds of Chinese cabbage , shredded in  1" strips from your CSA

1 pound Danjo Farms ground pork, crumbled and cooked from your CSA

3 bay leafs

2 tablespoons of fresh chopped Italian parsley from your CSA

4 tablespoons of vegetable or chicken paste base

2 medium carrot, diced from you CSA

2 medium onion, diced

2 stalks of celery with leaves, diced

2 teaspoons of  minced garlic

1 tablespoon of pickling spice

sea salt & lemon pepper to taste

8 cups of water

2 tablespoons of olive oil

Place in a large stock pot olive oil, cabbage, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, paste base of choice and herbs & spices. add 1/2 cup of water and sweat until vegetables are tender stirring occasionally on med-low heat. Add remaining water to pot and simmer for 2 hours. Sea salt & lemon pepper to taste and finish with a small amount of corn starch and cold water mixed together to thicken to desired consistency. Serve with strips of fried tortillas or chow mien noodles and topped with diced green onions. Try this with a nice piece of Jo's multi-grain bread. Enjoy by a nice peaceful fireplace and wonderful friends! Try it neighbors you'll be glad you did!Wink

Our Story

Dan and Joanne Nelson are avid, professional Certified Naturally Grown farmers. Since both of them grew up on farms in rural Iowa and Utah, they have dreamed of owning a small farm. They have had a small farm since 1997 in Utah, then moving to Stockton, Missouri in 2002 on 80 acres.

In January of 2006 they purchased 15 acres 5 miles south of Moberly, Missouri. They have 5 boys - Brad, Derek, Jesse, Aaron and Wade that play an important role in keeping the farm going.

They grow vegetable, berry and fruit crops for their CSA program, two local farmers markets and their "All Missouri" Country Store.  The 5 greenhouses are usually full by springtime and early summer supplying the acre of produce they grow out each year.  They operate Rise n Shine Bakery from their farm to the delight of many happy customers.

With a great love for the land they planted 21 fruit trees namely apples, apricots, pears, plums, peaches and cherries in 2008 to start the family fruit orchard.  Another 50 berry bushes went in the same year to grow out blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and with 1000 strawberry plants too!

The 2 ponds on the property allow a steady supply of water to the animals that rotationally graze through the year. They have turkeys, chickens, and pigs being certified through the Animal Welfare Approved program. This program has the highest standards of humane treatment and care of livestock in the world. Within the barnyard you can see the friendly Labrador Retriever Snickers, the cat named Felix, Molly and Jake the Bronze Turkeys, Wilbur the Boar and a gaggle or two of wild Canadian geese waddling around with their young. Bees buzzing from their 2 bee hives are working to keep things pollinated and even give them some honey. And of course, the frogs, spiders, mice, snakes, and lizards that make their way in this world of ours.

We truly enjoy having neighbors, friends and family visit our farmstead and invite you to come out sometime.  Just stop in and take a break from the busy world we live in. You'll be glad you did! Maybe do a little fishing on us. May happiness and peace be with you. May God bless your lives always.

Dan & Joanne Nelson and the boys!Smile

Farming Methods

Danjo Farms is Certified Naturally Grown, which uses absolutely no synthetic chemicals, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizers on our crops or fields. We use minimal and careful use of even organically approved soil amendments and sprays. We care for our soil, water, and air quality with crop rotations, cover crops, protective buffer strips and ecologically sustainable farming practices. We use no chemically treated or genetically modified seeds - only heirloom and untreated seed. We follow sanitary post-harvest practices including proper transport, storage and the use of only potable water for the washing of produce. We strive in every way to pass on the land and surrounding environment in an even better condition than it was passed on to us.
